Approach tag
Unschooling
Interest-led; no boxed year. Parent still owns instruction.
Use this tag to find families who want this methodology.
In a small parent-hired group
No boxed week. The hired adult might take kids to a library, a creek, a workshop, or sit with whatever the child is already doing. Subjects show up when life needs them. Still a small parent-hired group meeting in the real world — not a school that “does unschooling,” not an LMS with empty modules.
Why a parent might want this
A parent might want to follow a kid’s curiosity instead of a scope-and-sequence. That is a family choice about the week. We do not claim better outcomes. Indiana still puts equivalent instruction on the parent (IC 20-33-2-28); unschooling does not move that duty onto Redbud.
What it is not
Not a Redbud program and not a year we write. The parent still owns instruction — including IC 20-33-2-28. The tag is not a SKU.
Recommended reading for parents
We do not sell these. They are parent reading — books, archives, and official sites. Link-outs only. Redbud is not a bookstore and not a curriculum publisher.
John Holt
The book that still frames interest-led learning for many families.
John Holt (later editions with Pat Farenga)
Holt’s case for learning outside school. See also his site.
Peter Gray
A psychologist’s account of play and self-directed learning. Publisher page; we do not sell it.
Wikipedia
Overview of the practice — not a Redbud year.
Approach tags are labels families put on a pod. They are not a Redbud SKU and not a catalog. Redbud is not a school. Indiana has no required homeschool curriculum list. The parent owns instruction — including the duty of equivalent instruction under IC 20-33-2-28.
